Last night, my friend, Kam, invited me to go with her to a screening of “N.” on the L.E.S.; and I’m really glad that I did. “N.” was done by a young -may I add gorgeous?- director/screenwriter named AV Rockwell; and it features several people, including CurT@!n$, Jesse Boykins III, and Sam Pollard, discussing their thoughts and opinions about the word “nigger.” I strongly encourage you to give it a watch. It’s short and sweet, very well edited, far from preachy but with great points…and c’mon, Miles Davis will keep you entertained!

After the video was screened, Jonathon McCoy, a really bright 11 year old with a campaign to drop the ‘N’ word, delivered his latest speech (not online yet); and then everyone in the audience, including Jonathon and his mom, CurT@!n$, singer/songwriter Shyvonne, AV, myself, and many others expressed our additional thoughts, comments, and concerns. Of course John Mayer came up.

I believe that every point made in the video was beyond credible and well articulated. So it’s tough to finalize and say where we as people -Black, White, Hispanic or Asian – are supposed to go from here.

Personally and before I even saw this video, I’ve been trying to stop using the word in my conversations with friends and such. But I still recite the word when listening to music and sharing lyrics on this blog. To be honest, my main reason for wanting to stop using the word almost has nothing to do with racism, I just wanted to expand my vocabulary and find more ways to acknowledge mi bredren dem.

So who’s ideals or opinions in the video do you associate with the most, or what are your own thoughts about the use of the N word? 1, 2, 3, comment!

And follow AV on twitter and check out her vimeo for more stuff..
